For the week of June 4th-9th, over 40 LATAM representatives were invited to visit Brussels as well as EU borderregions for a study visit on EU cross-border cooperation. The objective of the study visit was to allow border region stakeholders from Europe and Latin America to exchange experiences on cross-border cooperation in support of innovation. The working meetings provided Latin American participants to gain first-hand knowledge and understanding of the types of actions implemented by cross-border regions in support of innovation and value chain development.
The get-together of the LATAM delegates with various European stakeholders such as representatives from the Smart Specialisation Platform for Agri-Food or AEBR as well as experts on border integration proved to be highly successful as experiences and ideas could be exchanged in a lively and interactive format. Subsequent to a two-day stay in Brussels, the LATAM representatives split into groups to visit four EU border regions to learn about their cross-border cooperation formats in detail. The field visits included the regions of Aragón and Nouvelle Aquitaine/Midi Pyrénées, Central Denmark, Italy / Slovenia (Ljubljana, Trieste, Gorizia, San Daniele) as well as Galicia / Norte de Portugal.
We wish to express our particular thanks to the host institutions of the field visits who shared their valuable insight and made this study visit a remarkable experience for everyone involved:
